According to the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/cycles\/jan08bcdc_memo.html\">National Bureau of Economic Research<\/a> :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cA recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bill McBride, the founder of Calculated Risk,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2020\/03\/sunday-night-futures-limit-down.html\">believes<\/a>  we are already in a recession:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWith the sudden economic stop, and with many states shutting down by closing down schools, bars and restaurants\u2026my view is the US economy is now in a recession (started in March 2020), and GDP will decline sharply in Q2. The length of the recession will depend on the course of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"How deep will it go?\">How deep will it go?<\/h2>\n<p>No one knows for sure. It depends on how long it takes to beat this virus. Goldman Sachs  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calculatedriskblog.com\/2020\/03\/sunday-night-futures-limit-down.html\">anticipates<\/a>  we will see a difficult first half of the year, but the economy will recover in the second half (see below):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/skyrisere.com\/listings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/848C72C0-02FB-4F38-981F-CCF79AD37D60.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"3222\"  src=\"http:\/\/skyrisere.com\/listings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/848C72C0-02FB-4F38-981F-CCF79AD37D60.jpeg\" alt=\"Goldman Sach Forecast\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skyrisere.com\/listings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/848C72C0-02FB-4F38-981F-CCF79AD37D60.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/skyrisere.com\/listings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/848C72C0-02FB-4F38-981F-CCF79AD37D60-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/skyrisere.com\/listings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/848C72C0-02FB-4F38-981F-CCF79AD37D60-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Goldman also projects we\u2019ll have \u201cfurther strong gains in early 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This aligns with the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellsfargo.com\/investment-institute\/ia-quarter-world-stood-still\/\">projection<\/a>  from Wells Fargo Investment Institute:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOnce the virus infection rate peaks, we expect a recovery to gain momentum into the final quarter of the year and especially into 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, no one knows for sure how long the pandemic will last. The hope is that it will resolve sometime over the next several months. Most agree that when it does, <b>the economy will regain its strength quickly.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Bottom Line\">Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>This virus is not only impacting the physical health of Americans, but also the financial health of the nation.
