Komorebi in Silicon Valley

Luxury experiences are found in the simple gestures of life.

Komorebi is a Japanese term which refers to the beautiful way sunlight filters through trees. It's an interplay between light and leaves. The image is peaceful and warm.

This week's announcement by the Bank of Japan to introduce negative interest rates may leave Japanese investors searching for assets in the U.S.

The Bank will apply a negative interest rate of minus 0.1 percent to current accounts that
financial institutions hold at the Bank. It will cut the interest rate further into negative territory if judged as necessary.

The policy means banks are paying for the privilege of parking their money and represents a last resort for a country that has struggled through a quarter-century of weak growth. In theory, negative rates will push banks to lend more to companies, which would then spend and hire.

The danger arises if banks pass on the rate to depositors in some form, such as new maintenance fees. People might just be encouraged to take their money out of banks and invest in “safe assets” – literal safes at home.

However, for the savvier depositors, investments in U.S. real estate may offer better opprtunities and returns.
